Aussie legend Tim Minchin will kick off the 60th anniversary of Adelaide Festival next year with a free concert.

The comic and songwriter will perform at Elder Park for the opening event complete with fireworks, while over 70 more events have been confirmed for the festival which runs from 28 February to 15 March.

Also set to feature at the 2020 festival is a very special tribute to late songwriter, Gurrumul.

“We are so proud and honoured to present Buŋgul, a tribute in song, dance, film and ceremony to an exceptional and unique musician, the late Dr Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, better known as Gurrumul – perhaps the greatest voice ever recorded on this continent – with the participation of elders from Galiwin’ku, Elcho Island," festival artistic directors Rachel Healy and Neil Armfield said.

"This is a special landmark event for the Festival, adding a further dimension to Gurrumul’s work and culture."

The music line-up for 2020 also includes Didirri, E^ST, Clare Bowditch, Kevin Morby, Weyes Blood, The Parov Stelar Band, Vince Jones & The Heavy Hitters, Lisa Gerrard & Paul Grabowsky, Joep Beving and The New Pornographers.

Visual arts fans will also be able to catch a "virtual" performance from Kate Miller-Heidke (exclusively through a VR headset) in the Australian premiere of Egypt; an interactive virtual-reality installation by the Netherlands’ composer and video artist Michel van der Aa.

“2020 represents a major milestone for South Australia’s own nationally and internationally-acclaimed Adelaide Festival," South Australia Premier Steven Marshall said.

"This year we celebrate the Festival’s 60th anniversary and welcome the very best artists from around the world, across the country and from our own community. Our Festival’s well-earned, world-wide reputation for delivering exceptional and memorable experiences for visitors, provides a valuable opportunity to showcase all our festive city offers."
