Oxford’s breathless, post-punk quintet make their return

Secret Sounds are proud to announce the return of acclaimed Oxford quintet FOALS, who are set to play two club shows when they return to our shores in February 2011.

Monumental in scope and sound, back in August 2010 the five-piece’s widescreen dance-punk blew the minds of those lucky enough to witness their first ever sold-out Australian tour. Now, alongside their slot on the national St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, the “Black Gold” outfit will yet again break the rules, delivering what promises to be some of the most in-demand and dynamic shows this Summer.

“Our rules were initially done on the fly: we formed to play parties,” admits keyboardist Edwin Congreave, of FOALS impressive 2008 debut, Antidotes, which spawned singles “Cassius” and “Balloons”. “The number one rule was making dance music; the number two rule was that our guitars had to sound like synths, and the synths had to sound like guitars.” Rules, however, were meant to be broken. “For this new album,” Edwin insists, “there wasn’t any of that.”

Shortlisted for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize, FOALS second effort, Total Life Forever, is an album of yearning, emotional tension and playful, compulsive dancefloor anthems. Recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden, and given birth in the band’s basement studio (nicknamed “the House of Supreme Mathematics”), Total Life Forever showcases frontman Yannis Philippakis’ gift for introspective delights, angular, hushed textures, and gorgeous pop hooks.

Joining FOALS will be Brisbane’s LAST DINOSAURS who are no strangers to starting a party. Their EP Back From The Dead captured the hearts of many young lovers when it was released earlier this year, filled to the brim with indie dance floor tracks. A hint of new material for the Summer will see LAST DINOSAURS add a few more tricks to their show, alongside their staple singles “Honolulu” and “As Far As You’re Concerned”.

With FOALS incredible live performances heralded as some of 2010 year’s best gigs, there’s no doubting the band’s upcoming visit to Australia will be something truly special. FOALS are set to perform an exclusive all-ages show at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, and an 18+ show in Melbourne, VIC. Tickets go on sale Friday.
