Frightened Rabbit are set to release their 3rd full length studio album, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks on 1st March 2010 and as a special treat for Australian fans, the band will be playing two intimate shows in Melbourne and Sydney this January and February. The Midnight Organ Fight made Frightenened Rabbit one of Britain’s most fiercely taken-to-heart new bands, publically feted by fellow musicians like Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), Nick Harmer (Death Cab For Cutie) and Simon Neil (Biffy Clyro), and no wonder – Midnight Organ Fight was a visceral break up record bordering on the metaphysical, and loaded with memorable, heartbreaking songs. Frightened Rabbit’s steady ascent is set to rise incrementally with the release of the new album, appetite for which has been futher stoked by the anthemic ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ teaser single which has earned the band their first Zane Lowe plays and unaminous critcal favour from NME to News Of The World. The Winter Of Mixed Drinks showcases a more fully realised Frightened Rabbit sound; speaking to nme.com at the end of October, lead singer Scott Hutchison explained ‘We've broadened our horizons sonically and it feels like a natural move forward. Most importantly, it’s better than the last one. That's all I wanted, really.’ Produced once again by Peter Katis, at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, and engineered by Stuart Hamilton at Castlesound Studios in Scotland, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks boasts stunning string arrangments from labelmate, Teutonic ivory-botherer, Hauschka. ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ was the title I had in my mind before I even started writing the album’, says Scott ‘I was becoming more and more interested in the idea of a rejection of the habits and behaviour most people see as normal. It’s about losing your mind in order to reset the mind and the body. Forget what’s gone before and wash it out. It’s a good introduction to the record’s themes” In order to facilitate the new material and flesh out the older tunes live, the band – once upon a time simply Scott alone – have expanded to a five piece with the addition of new member Gordon Skene (formerly of Make Model). ‘We want to do the recordings justice when we play them live. Gordon will be playing a bundle of instruments - we just bought a tasty wee mandolin for him to fiddle with today. We're really excited to have him involved.’ The band have just completed an UK tour in support of GOMEZ & MODEST MOUSE. Frightened Rabbit is: Scott Hutchison (vocals, guitar), Grant Hutchison (Drums, vocals), Billy Kennedy (guitar, keys), Andy Monaghan (bass, keyboard, guitar), Gordon Skene (guitar, keys, etc) ALSO APPEARING AT LANEWAY FESTIVAL SYDNEY & MELBOURNE AND ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN HEADLINE SHOWS Full sideshow details below... | |
