A venue that helped set the standard for Melbourne’s clubbing scene, beloved nightclub Lounge has announced it will shut its doors in 2019.
As Broadsheet reports, the CBD-located venue will close next April after almost 30 years in business, with a yet-to-be-named Melbourne hospitality group set to take over the lease.
“Having been a home to bands, DJs, art installations, performance pieces, short film screenings, live radio streams and of course multi-day parties, it’s a loss that is sure to be felt heavily by Melbourne’s music and arts community,” owners said via Facebook.
“We will be celebrating the 29-year life of the venue with an extra special last run of 29 shows, which will include a number of returning old parties, as well as local and international artists that have been part of the fabric of the club over the journey.
“As Lounge has brought so much joy to so many people over such a long period of time, we aim for this period to be a series of celebrations, rather than a funeral.”
Lounge was an integral part of the house and techno boom of the '90s, while also providing an incubator for three generations of DJs.
The venue became a hub of creativity, housing unhinged performance art, underground drag, competitive pool playing and live performances from influential international bands such as Young Disciples over the years.
