Revered Melbourne music identity Andy Portokallis has passed away today following a battle with cancer.

Collingwood venue The Tote (which Portokallis served as co-publican) announced the news on Facebook this morning.

Portokallis was involved in the operations of some of Melbourne's most popular venues, including Bar Open, Pony, Yah Yah’s, Marquis Of Lorne and the Melbourne Spanish Club over the years.

In 2010, he famously led the charge in saving and resurrecting The Tote which was forced to close its doors. Portokallis' battle against the state's lockout laws and zero tolerance have led to lasting changes that re-shaped the Victorian live music industry.

The Tote has honoured Portokollis as "Fitzroy's oldest and most mischievous teenager" and described him as "the loyalist friend" and "a dedicated family man".

The Music's Leigh Treweek has paid tribute to Portokallis' memory and his legacy in the Australian music industry.

Today, a shadow fell across Melbourne as we lost one of our own.

Andy Portokallis will always be known as one of the splendored three who saved our most iconic music venue, The Tote. That action alone will see his name live on in Melbourne's music landscape.

However, Portokallis also co-ran Bar Open, Pony, Yah Yah’s, Marquis of Lorne and the Melbourne Spanish Club with his partner in battle, Jon Perring. And there were some battles from the State Government to liquor licensing directors where they fought the fight and won.

Andy will be missed by all because he was a friend to all. An infectious smile that lit up when he saw you -  he truly brought the vibe.

I will miss the cuddle I got whenever I saw him.

I will miss the cheeky text message link to a muscle car he'd seen on unique cars website telling me how greater a deal it was

I will miss the call five days before Meredith chasing a ticket, and won't Meredith be a little more sombre without him.

I will treasure the chats at school pick-up his face glowing when he talked about his kids.

From all of my team at The Music and myself we send our greatest sympathy to Andy's family and hope there is comfort in the knowledge that Andy created a broader family for you all as the Melbourne music community will always be there to support you and will hold you all in their thought.

Rock On, Andy. We already miss you.
