The unsung heroes of film and TV, some of the country’s best composers were celebrated tonight at the 2018 Screen Music Awards.
Australian screen music and film luminaries gathered at City Recital Hall in Sydney, with the composing teams behind Picnic At Hanging Rock, Mystery Road and more taking out awards.
Paper Planes director Robert Connolly was this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Services to Australian Screen Award, with the film’s composer, Nigel Westlake, stating during the event:
“You would be hard pressed to find another individual who has given voice to the artistry of so many Australian composers, a man who has nurtured our community and provided the resources for our local talent to shine and realise their craft so thoroughly and with absolute integrity.
“The opportunity to work with Rob on Paper Planes was a highlight of my career. He is a filmmaker of the utmost integrity, a storyteller of immense facility, and has always believed in the power of cinema as a force for good.”
The 2018 event also saw four first-time winners, including Perth-based musician and composer Sean Tinnion, who picked up Best Music for a Documentary for his score for ABC’s A Stargazer’s Guide To The Cosmos, while AGSC President Caitlin Yeo picked up two awards (Feature Film Score of the Year and Best Soundtrack Album) for her work on The Butterfly Tree.
