Sydney Festival have just dropped their huge line-up and let's just say, 2019 is looking pretty good... Running from 9-27 January, the festival will take over the city with events including arts, music and dance.
Neneh Cherry leads the festival's music line-up, taking over Carriageworks in what will be only her second Australian visit in nearly 30 years.
Spinifex Gum makes its Sydney Festival debut - the project is a collaboration between Marliya from Gondwana Choirs choir of young Indigenous women from Cairns and The Cat Empire's Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill. They'll be performing at the Sydney Opera House alongside AB Original's Briggs and Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett.
This year's festival will see several installations placed around the city, including Fly Me To The Moon which will mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Sydney Festival is asking participants to collectively cycle 384,400 kilometres to the moon as part of the installation.
Local artist Jacob Nash will take over the Barangaroo headland with a large scale outdoor sculpture with the declaration ‘ALWAYS’: always was, always will be. There will also be an overnight vigil held at the Barangaroo Reserve on 25 January to reflect on the impact of colonisation in Australia, which will feature musical performances and stories of Country from current and future community elders.
Artist, dancer and choreographer Amrita Hepi will share The Ropes, a newly commissioned video installation that looks at "the history of skipping with aspects of blak experience" as part of the festival's Indigenous program Blak Out.
This year will also see the Masters Of Modern Sound event takeover the Art Gallery Of NSW from 10-12 January, which will see local and international composers, musicians sound designers and performers create an after-dark experience combining art, space and sound.
