Melbourne’s music industry is set to get a boost, with the Victorian Music Development Office unveiling a number of programs and projects that will support artists, managers and businesses.

The new initiatives will be aimed at those “creating significant cultural impact and economic value”, with a focus on “cross sector opportunities and the extensive potential with international market development”.

After hosting visiting Chinese music industry representatives at Melbourne Music Week next month, the VMDO, in collaboration with the Association of Artist Managers and AIR, will launch the Fast Track Fellowship, which will offer international professional development to managers and independent labels.

VMDO First Peoples Music Business Manager Neil Morris is also working with Spotify, YouTube and YIRRAMBOI to create new opportunities, while “underrepresented Victorian artists” will get a leg up through the Support Acts for the Big Names program.

Education is also a strong focus for the VMDD.

“We are about to embark on an analysis into the current career paths for music professionals with RMIT University,” General Manager Bonnie Dalton said.

“The results of this study will inform our future program developments aimed at supporting long term and sustainable careers for Victorians who work in micro to medium music businesses.”

There’ll be plenty of opportunities to discuss the state of the industry and the aforementioned initiatives at VMDO’s monthly networking breakfast.
