Keep Sydney Open will host a rally next week to coincide with a bill to axe the city's lockout laws being put before the Legislative Council.
As The Daily Telegraph reported this week, a bill to repeal the 1.30am lockout will be debated next Thursday (25 October) and the anti-lockouts group will hold the rally outside NSW Parliament House during that time.
“We know there’s been a push to have the lockout laws scrapped from within the government. This is our chance to reinforce at this crucial time how deeply despised these laws are and how they have crippled Sydney,” Keep Sydney Open's Tyson Koh said.
“The effect on culture, small business and our civil liberties has been undeniable. We feel patronised — like our city has been taken away from us.”
"People look at how the spaces that were once venues are being turned into apartments; they read about the benefits given to the gambling industry and they question the government’s motives for introducing a curfew in the first place.”
“In any case, we now know that areas within the lockout zone have had an increase in assaults, so from whichever angle you choose to look at it, the lockout laws have been a disaster and need to go.”
“It’s time for the Government and Opposition to atone for ruining Sydney’s nightlife, but it’s not too late to rewrite our story and become the 24-hour city we need to be.”
It comes after Deputy Premier John Barilaro called for the legislation to be scrapped in the CBD by year's end earlier this month.
