ABC Chairman Justin Milne has today resigned following allegations he interfered in several management decisions.
As ABC reports, Milne faced calls to stand down after he reportedly attempted to sway former managing director Michelle Guthrie, who was sacked on Monday, to sack two reporters, while he also allegedly tried to reverse triple j's decision to move the date of the Hottest 100 this year.
A source alleged to The Guardian yesterday that Milne told the board, "Malcolm [Turnbull] will go ballistic” over the Hottest 100 decision and that "[Guthrie] stood up to Milne when he tried to interfere with management decisions. He believed [reporter] Emma Alberici should be sacked and the top 100 should not be moved.”
Milne denied the allegations after the ABC board met without him today.
"There was absolutely no interference in the independence of the ABC by the Government," Milne said.
"Nobody from the Government has ever rung me and told me what to do in relation to the ABC."
The ABC board are reportedly now discussing who will take over as acting chairman.
