The University of Queensland has revealed a proposed development plan that has caused concern within the student body, alumni and local community due to the apparent demolition of the historic Schonell Theatre.
Arts student Nicholas Comino, who is also the vice-president for gender and sexuality in the student executive body, has today launched a petition on change.org in an attempt to save the theatre.
Speaking to The Music earlier today, Comino spoke of the importance of the theatre to the broader community. "What I really like about the Schonell Theatre is that it is essentially a community space so it's not just something that affects UQ students but all of Brisbane. There's a lot of history within the theatre and the space and what it means to people," he said.
"To have no replacement in mind and to think that you can just shift it down the road shows a total lack of caring about culture within the university. Total lack of understanding about what people want from the environment. And total lack of care for the history of the university itself."
The proposed plan does make mention of a redevelopment of the Avalon Theatre located off-campus, however Comino believes this is "insignificant".
"It's not on campus and it's insignificant in comparison to the Schonell Theatre."
In a statement to The Music, Professor Joanne Wright, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) said, "UQ is striving to provide outstanding facilities in keeping with its standing as a global top 50 university."
"A final decision is yet to be made about a proposed redevelopment of the Student Hub complex.
"Any redevelopment would include considerations about the need for a modern student performance space to meet the needs of drama classes and other student performances, and for attractive modern facilities for student leisure.
"If a redevelopment were to proceed, the university would make transitional arrangements to accommodate ongoing activities including drama studies and other performance events.
"In addition, UQ’s Master Plan and draft Site Development Plan include a proposed landmark building as an arts and cultural centre.
"Student Hub facilities, including the Red Room student bar and the Schonell Theatre, are tired and well past their prime, and the theatre does not comply with disability access guidelines.
"UQ undertakes extensive planning and consultation to ensure all courses can be delivered during any capital works projects."
