As of 5 October, the Sydney CBD will have a brand new live music program.
Midnight Sun, which will be held at Ultimo’s Foundry616, will offer a regular Friday night program featuring some of the best established and up and coming Sydney acts, in response to the city’s lockout laws.
“There are four curators who will program music across the indie, alt rock, hip hop, electronic and neo soul/jazz scenes,” said Midnight Sun curator and musician Ben Panucci.
“Coming up you can hear Broken Mountain, Godtet, The New Venusians, Elizabeth Fader, Jannah Beth, plus heaps more. Joel Rapaport from Big Village Records is curating Another Dimension, a monthly hip hop party which will feature a headliner and an open mic set with a live house band.”
“We want to unify late night audiences who have a shared love of high quality live music and aren’t ready for bed. Ten bucks will get you entry, great acts and a Young Henry’s tinnie - all within a stone’s throw from Central Station.”
The Sly Fox promoter Cash Williams and visual artist/producer Daniel “Ears” O’Toole (AKA Captain Earwax) will also play a part in the programming. Midnight Sun will also hold regular guest programming evenings, with Phantastic Ferniture’s Elizabeth Hughes taking the reins on 16 November.
The program is backed by the City Of Sydney’s recent Business Support Grants, which were announced back in March, and has been funded initially for six months through the grant.
“We created our new category of late-night grants to help existing venues who want to put on more live music and diverse programming,” said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore. “Earlier this year, Foundry616 received a grant of $22,500, out of more than $503,000 given to a total of 24 small businesses and venues over the last year.”
“This grant ensures Sydney will have a new regular late-night music destination and there’ll be more work for artists and DJs.”
The program kicks off with MICRA, Mirrah and Scruffamuda performing at the opening event on 5 October. Head to theGuide below for more info.
