US rapper Mac Miller, aka Malcolm James McCormick, has passed away aged 26 of an apparent overdose.

Miller’s label, Warner Music, confirmed the news via Twitter, while TMZ reports the artist was found in his San Fernando Valley home on Friday by a friend.

His family have since released a statement to TMZ: "Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers."

Warner said they were “deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the untimely passing of Mac Miller.”

“We join all of his fans across the globe in extending our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”

The news follows Miller’s ongoing struggles with substance abuse, with the rapper crashing his car into a utility pole and being arrested for driving under the influence back in May.

Miller’s last album, Swimming, was released last month.
