Organisation: Collision Course - Managing Director

How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I became involved in the music business in Rockhampton, Central QLD. I started putting on shows there, then moved to Brisbane in 2008, worked for a bunch of different businesses and then began my own - managing, then eventually PR and now The Faction.

What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? The biggest change, I would say, is the pace - it's even quicker than previously seen. The pace from premiere to being available on an online outlet is driven by streaming outlets - and now the Spotify/Apple stream is even being used as the streaming link in a premiere in some instances.

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? I think it's going to continue to be revenue streams. It's great to see more and more bands able to make a living out of their music, but there's a great disconnect for most artists - and the "long tail" is now actually infinite.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Understand your worth. Understand that there are no jobs except that which you make for yourself. Be exceptional at it.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel/interview? I will be chatting about the heavy music community in Australia and chatting with people in heavy music's bands and industry and hopefully helping them gain knowledge on how to operate a little more efficiently in the industry!

What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? I hope to meet a tonne of new bands and industry people. Keen to do some business around signing acts!

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND and why? Gravemind. BIGSOUND rarely sees acts this goddamn heavy and they are honestly one of the most clever marketers out there. Also, The Beautiful Monument. Their show is going to be a time.

When and where is your panel? 5 Sep, X-Cargo, 11.45pm.
