Organisation: Collab Asia - VP
How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I started managing and working with my friends. Spoke to a few of mentors who generously gave me their time and encouragement and introduced me to the right people. I volunteered at FBI Radio and went to all the shows that I could, think Spectrum and Annandale in the mid-2000s.
What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? The power of discovery has shifted from radio, MTV and Channel V and onto the playlists of streaming platforms. The balance of power between artist and label stayed somewhat the same. Independent artists have a lot more options now, but also a lot more work to get discovered.
What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? Understanding and strategising for each streaming platform; Spotify, Apple and YouTube are difficult as the ecosystem changes all the time. Adapting to new technology has always been a challenge for an industry so prone to disruption. Continual change and adaption is the new normal.
What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Get mentors no matter what stage of career you are in. Work with people you admire and want to admire. Keep up to date with trends in other markets and genres. Learn basic data science. Be friends with your lawyers and accountants.
What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel? We'll be covering some artist manager stories. The focus will be on how to monetise and navigate the different digital platforms for all artists and music creators to promote, market and monetise their work. Especially for managers and independent musicians.
What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? Meeting lots of new people and reconnecting with friends!
Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND and why? ARSE.
When and where is your panel? 5 Sep, The Judith Wright Centre, 3.45pm.
