Organisation: Superfly - Programming
How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I was involved in the music committee at my university while interning at a local venue in town. Saved up enough money to intern in LA for a summer, which ultimately gave me the contacts for my current job at Superfly. Persistence, positivity, and putting myself out there.
What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? The shift in how data is used in the industry. A shift in the festival industry as a whole. A push for more female recognition and support in the industry (still need more of this).
What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? How data is used across the industry - using intuition vs strictly data. How festivals evolve during a time of saturation. We need to take a better look at the live music experience and what this is providing to the music community.
What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Know that we are in a time of transition in the industry, which can allow for great opportunity and innovation. Educate yourself, pay great attention to the details, and remember two things: the way you treat people will be associated with your reputation - and it's just rock'n'roll.
What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel? How we use our festivals as a platform for talent, our attention to the overall experience for both patrons and talent, and how we can utilise our festival platforms for representation and education.
What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? Discovery of incredible talent and industry professionals in Australia as well as ways we can work together in the future.
Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND and why? Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - I'm a big psych fan and Australia consistently has great psych bands popping up (King Gizzard & Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala, Pond, The Babe Rainbow, The Murlocs, etc).
When and where is your panel? 6 Sep, X-Cargo, 4pm.
