Internationally renowned songwriting legend Pat Pattison will lead University of Southern Queensland’s McGregor Music Retreat next year.

The man who helped John Mayer, Imagine Dragons, Gillian Welch, Justin Tranter and more hone their craft will offer an intensive, hands-on songwriting workshop from January 13 – 19.

Pattison’s also the author of bestselling book Writing Better Lyrics and teaches at Berklee College of Music.

“Every class I walk into I’ll see at least five songs I’ve never seen or heard before and my job is to do something to make those songs better, and so I’m always having to get better,” he explained.

“I can’t give anyone, any talent… My job, as I see it, is to give you information; to tell you what the tools are, to suggest how they might be used and to guide you and to help you become more adept at the [songwriting] process.”

The January workshop will be the first time that Pattison has taught a workshop of this length outside of the Berklee College of Music.

“You’re going to meet some folks who are just as passionate about what they do, as you are about what you do and when those kinds of folks get together anything can happen,” he said.

He’ll be joined by Australian singer-songwriter Mark Scholtez at the event.
