In a post written by Jones' wife Angie to the Spencer P Jones & The Escape Committee Facebook page, it was confirmed Jones had "passed away peacefully earlier this evening".
"It was truely [sic] beautiful & he is now at peace with his brothers in arms Brian H Hooper & Ashley Morgan Jones," the post reads.
"I request that people please respect the fact that some family members in New Zealand have yet to be notified. Jan, Spencer’s sister has only just arrived in from QLD.
"I feel completely exhausted and lost right now, the journey has been a long one for us both. I miss him soo [sic] much already, Sooo [sic] lost for words."
In 2016 a string of benefit shows were held in honour of Jones, to raise funds when the artist was battling a serious illness that left him unable to work.
Jones previously played with bands including The Johnnys, Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls and The Cuban Heels.
