It’s been a while since Sydney psych rock duo Deep Sea Arcade, aka Nic McKenzie and Nick Weaver, treated fans to new music, but the wait has been worth, with the arrival of new single Outlaw promising big things on the horizon.

The dreamy new cut is the first new music the band has released in more than two years and is taken from their long-awaiting second LP, due out for release later this year via LP Records/Universal Music.

Outlaw is about that whole concept of un-meeting somebody in a relationship that you know is slipping away from you,” McKenzie said.

“It’s like you know that the relationship is over but you are still in it, trying to save it and when the relationship inevitably does end you go through that process of un-meeting them and you are no longer part of their life or their family.

“You become the outlaw, not an in-law.”

Weaver elaborated on the music side of things: “One thing I really love about that song is that in the main part of the song it’s like three chords that really don’t belong together.

“They are all major chords but it sounds really dark because they don’t live in the same key, and it’s all melded together with this one note that goes through the whole song. I like the idea that this drone just makes everything glue together.”

Although it’s been a while between LPs (their debut Outlands dropping in 2012), it doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy, with McKenzie firmly embedded within the local music scene and honing his skills running VISIONS, an Australian-based touring company and label that works in conjunction with Chugg Music and Premier Artists.

Deep Sea Arcade will launch Outlaw at Yah Yah’s in Melbourne on August 24, before taking the party to The Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney and BIGSOUND next month.
