As if he needed another reason to cement his status as a rock god, Dave Grohl has today announced a special two-part mini-documentary that will be released this month.

The news comes as Foo Fighters’ mammoth Concrete And Gold world tour comes to an end, with the new project, Play, said to be “born of the most challenging performance of his storied career”.

Taking on the role of director alongside Mark Monroe (Sound City, Sonic Highways), Grohl will showcase his mindblowing talent as a musican across the documentary’s two parts.

Part one sets the documentary up, with the multi-instrumentalist narrating behind-the-scenes footage while he opens up on the process and challenges of recording.

To prove just how challenging recording can be – even if you are the frontman for one of the world’s biggest bands – part two will see Grohl record a 23-minute, one-man-band instrumental, playing all seven instruments featured.

As if that wasn’t enough, Grohl played every instrument live from start to finish, going back to the beginning and starting again if he made a mistake or thought he could do a better take.

It’s a recording process that might send other musicians insane, but not Dave Grohl, who rose to the challenge like only Dave Grohl could.

“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening,” Grohl said.

“And when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out.

“And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

The production of Play features Concrete And Gold engineer Darrell Thorp on sound, while Brandon Trost (The Disaster ArtistThis is The End) captured the events in black and white.

The end result is also interactive, with viewers able to either watch all seven Grohls playing together or focus on just one instrument, with sheet music available for each.

Play will be released August 10 via Roswell Records/RCA Records as a digital download and on streaming platforms before it drops on vinyl on September 28.
