Yours & Owls has “set a benchmark” for other festivals and events in Wollongong when it comes to minimising their impact on the local environment.

After teaming up with Plastic Free Wollongong and Citizen Blue last year, the beloved NSW event has confirmed that the 2018 festival will be plastic free, with single-use plastic water bottles, straws, cutlery and more replaced with “compostable and reusable alternatives”.

The shift is expected to replace more than 15,000 single-use items across the festival’s two days this September.

“The stance by Yours and Owls will set a benchmark for how festivals and events in the area can run successfully while minimising their impact on the local environment, it is something the entire community will celebrate,” Plastic Free Wollongong’s Andy Gray said.

But that’s not all, with organisers kicking off another great initiative a month out from the event with a day of tree planting and bush regeneration at Puckeys Estate on August 16.

The project is in partnership with Wollongong City Council, with those interested able to register here before August 8.

“Seeing rubbish in and about the coastline is a reminder that unless we are conscious of what we do with our waste, our waterways and ocean life will deteriorate,” festival director Balunn Jones said.

“There are so many good people in the community that spend their weeks raising awareness of these issues.

“We are lucky enough to have a festival right next to the beach and want to do whatever we can to make sure we are contributing to making our town a better place for the future.”

Yours & Owls will return to Stuart Park in North Wollongong from 29 – 30 September, with Angus & Julia Stone, Peking Duk, Alison WonderlandThe Jungle Giants, Methyl Ethel and stacks more in tow; check out theGuide for all the details.
