After teasing fans with a quirky and charming single earlier this month, classically trained alt-pop artist Wren has today dropped her new EP, The Pioneer And The Thief, in full, and it’s every bit as stunning as promised.

It’s a follow-up to 2015’s Raw, and the three years between EPs has seen a radical transformation for Wren, who has spent recent years touring, writing and recording for other artists as well as completely her doctorate.

“I realised there had been this huge gap in time where I had let my own contemporary tracks take the back seat in terms of my musical career,” Wren told The Music.

“That’s not to say I wasn’t writing during this time - I was writing like crazy! However, I wasn’t recording or releasing any of my singer-songwriter material.

“As I am first and foremost a composer, this is where I derive my greatest joy, but it also means I can disappear for large lengths of time and forget to put my face out there.”

Wanting to break back into the scene, Wren teamed up with friend and producer Michael McGlynn for lead single Secrets.

“This track I guess set the tone for the EP - alternative in nature but popular enough too appeal,” she explained.

“It’s quite hard to pinpoint the EP it into a specific genre. I would say it’s a clash of many influences, with each track drawing on its own unique inspirations.

“All of the tracks are quite unique in their sound and style and make for an interesting journey.”

Secrets’ accompanying music video took off internationally and was even recognised at some major festival in the US and UK.

“I was absolutely thrilled about was the response,” she said.

She describes winning the UK Songwriting Contest and coming in second at Nashville’s the International Songwriting Competition as “unreal”.

“I am so grateful to Michael McGlynn [director] and Simon Adams [editor] for their work here.

“It really gave the track so much more life and relevance in terms of being able to see and understand the recording process.”

With plans to grow her presence overseas and at home, Wren already has a new “catchy and upbeat” single to release.

“Originally, I wrote it for another artist for a TV show, however, I have decided that I really like the track and so I will be releasing it myself following the EP release,” she reveals.

“Apart from this, I will be working HARD until February 2019 to complete my doctorate on time.

“However, you can all expect some very interesting music and music-film projects to come out of this, including some really awesome international collaborations with world-renowned musicians.”
