The Melbourne Writers Festival has just dropped its massive 2018 theme and program.
Irvine Welsh, Magda Szubanski, Paul Kelly and more will explore matters of ‘Life And Death’ in a program featuring, intimate discussions, new writing, theatre and music.
Speaking about the theme, artistic director Marieke Hardy said in a statement, “Our theme, a matter of life and death, is a reflection on the things people reach for in order to survive and those moments where we look to words for comfort”.
“It is a celebration of empathy. Yes, life is hard, but we are in it together.”
In theme, Magda Szubanski will attend her own funeral party, cult Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh will reflect on Redemption and Paul Kelly will perform poetry to music in Other People’s Words.
The festival has already unveiled an impressive list of international guests including Black Panther writer and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, Pulitzer Prize winners Ronan Farrow and Emily Nussbaum, and Andrew W.K. in his only Australian speaking engagement.
‘From 24 August to 2 September we want Melbourne to join our literary salon. We want people to skip from a musical performance to immersive theatre and on to some quiet corner to see writers they know doing things they don’t usually do,’ Hardy said.
