Fans of ABC’s The Checkout have slammed the broadcaster following news the consumer affairs program has been axed after six seasons.
Featuring The Chaser’s Julian Morrow and Craig Reucassel as presenters and executive producers, the series was scheduled to enter production for its seventh season when ABC pulled the plug.
In a statement to Twitter, Morrow said they were “disappointed” with the ABC’s funding priorities, citing the show’s relatively high production costs amid budget cuts as the reason behind the cancellation.
“A public broadcaster that’s independent of commercial influence is the natural home, probably the only home, for a show like The Checkout,” Morrow said.
With Morrow stating The Checkout’s inbox was “always overflowing with rip-offs, corporate double-speak and advertising fails”, it’s not surprising the axing has caused an uproar from fans on social media, with one viewer calling it an “absolute joke” on Twitter.
“This is a huge mistake. To whom should I address my letter?” said another Twitter user.
Others described the ABC's decision as “straight up bullshit” and “a massive loss”, with many hoping the series finds a new home to continue.
