Major bars and nightclubs on the Gold Coast were forced to close hours early on Saturday night after power was cut on Cavill Avenue, disrupting gigs and causing venues to send punters home.

Speaking to The Music about the outage, Melbas On The Park manager Ricky Munday said “[southeast Queensland energy company] Energex were apparently doing some scheduled maintenance work and obviously something went wrong”.

Because of the blackout, the Survival Dance Party with DJ Koo had to be rescheduled to Sunday night. Munday said because it was a “ticketed event, less than 10% were refunded,” and was frustrated by how the events unfolded, “because no one wants to go out on a Sunday — a lot didn’t show up”.

Munday also went on to say “it has been hard to get a positive response from Energex” and that he was now “looking to be compensated”.

Manager of Helm Bar, Justin Fletcher, said they were without power during a function for almost two hours from 10pm Saturday night. Also speaking to The Music, he said it was “just one of those unfortunate things,” but that it was “unlucky [the outage] was during peak trade”.

Energex has been contacted for comment.
