Newcastle's The Edwards bar, co-owned by former Silverchair bassist Chris Joannou, has been damaged in a major fire this week.

As ABC reports, ten fire trucks were called to the Parry Street venue just after midnight on Thursday, while aerial appliances were also fighting the flames from above.

70% of the building was destroyed by the time the fire was extinguished.

Newcastle duty officer Chief Inspector Paul Johnson confirmed that a crime scene has since been established.

"At this stage all we can say is the premises was secured by employees late in the evening," Johnson said.

"Some time after they left the fire was noticed.

"A crime scene has been established.

"At this point in time the examination is yet to take place, but it would appear as if it was in the vicinity of the kitchen area."

News regarding a potential date for The Edwards re-opening is yet to be announced.

"Friends, as we process the enormity of what went down last night, we are absolutly [sic] blown away by the love and support that has poured in from our beloved Newy and wider community - for this, words alone will never do, it’s all feels," a statement posted to The Edwards Facebook page reads.

"Chris & [co-owner Chris Johnston] would like to thank YOU for making the The Edwards what it is, for the amazing outpouring of love and all the good good times.

It will be a while before we know any of the things you might be wondering, so sit tight and we’ll get back to you when we can."
