The Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe has broken his silence on comments he made about rape during a show in Sydney last week that resulted in some punters walking out of the gig

In a series of tweets posted this morning, the US songwriter claims he "never made light of rape culture" and was being attacked by two men in the audience.

It comes after a petition was launched calling for the band's Australian tour to be axed following Newcombe's comments, in which he told an audience member, "Whatever, you're a dickhead. Your mum probably screamed like that when she was being raped and that's how you were born". 

The tour wrapped up in Melbourne last night.
