Once again shining a light on the unsung heroes of the music industry, ARIA has confirmed the Music Teacher Of The Year Award will return this year, with applications opening today.

Nominations are open to the public and any music teacher working at a school, kindergarten, early childhood centre, youth centre or private tuition music school is eligible.

“The presentation of this award was a highlight of the 2017 ARIAs, and was able to shine a light on the incredible, inspiring and impactful work being done by thousands of music teachers across Australia,” ARIA Chief Executive Dan Rosen said.

National arts education organisation The Song Room is once again teaming up with ARIA for the award.

“Many of the greatest musicians of our time credit their teachers with being a critical factor in their success, but it’s much more than that, for many children their music or art teacher has helped them develop a sense of belonging and purpose,” The Song Room CEO Simon Gipson said.

Last year’s inaugural award was bestowed to South Australian teacher Renee McCarthy from Woodcroft College, who was selected from more than 1,600 initial nominations by ARIA Artist Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy, Josh Pyke, Lior and Missy Higgins.

A shortlist of nominees will be unveiled at the ARIA Nominations Event in October, with each nominee then partnered with an ARIA Artist Ambassadors who will visit their school.
