Spenda C's debut album, Bone Collector, is out today. In this exclusive track by track look, he takes you through everything that went into the album and collaborating with some of the best in the business.
The concept behind the Bone Collector project was to approach it the way a rapper would approach making a mixtape… Where as a rapper collects a bunch of beats and then raps over them, I wanted to flip that idea and collect a bunch of vocals from some of my favourite artists and build the songs around them.
For me collaboration is an exercise in trust. Most of the original beats I sent out were really just bare bones and have evolved so much from the early demos into the songs they are now. I'm really proud of this project and super thankful to all the amazing artists who believed in the vision.
Playing With Fire
Playing With Fire took me ages to get just right. A friend of mine, Chris Arnott, had this vocal from a session he did with a Sydney artists named Ava and thought it could work well for a track on my album. I really like the arrangement on this track.
On It’s Own
On It’s Own started with that latin-style guitar loop you can hear at the outro then grew into this weird summery pop/half time trap hybrid. Kate Fox and Tides parts complement each other so well and whole track just flows really nicely.
True Love
True Love is one of my favourite tracks on the album. I'm so thankful to Carmouflage Rose for fucking with the vision 'coz the demo beat from this track is completely different from what it is now! I'm a sucker for a good flute sample.
Shot Them Down
Shot Them Down was one of the very first demos I had ready for the album. I'm pretty sure Big Skeez freestyled his part in one take 'coz he's a freak like that. I was going for that future bass first drop, trap in the second drop-type combo and I think the parts work together even though they are so different.
Hype On Track
Hype on Track was initially a grime track but then we slowed it down and added a house beat. Dominic Rahmeel is one of my favourite vocalists and he kills this track!
My Type
My Type is the only song on the album were had the chance to build it with the feature artist actually in the room. Miss Blanks is a straight shooter and will tell you when she's vibing an idea or not which is super important in the collaboration process.
Way Too Much
Way Too Much is my attempt of flipping the usual gender song structure on its head. I wanted a male voice to do the singing parts and a female voice to do the raps. Rob Delirious and Jesswar were both tight with the concept and smashed their parts.
Family Mart
Family Mart features Cult Shotta, Geek., Rick Nova and Weny Dacillo, and Rui. I gave the beat to the Cult Shotta boys and they took it with them on holidays to Japan and it turned into this crazy rap/club banger and I fucking love it!
The Feeling
The Feeling is the perfect outro to the album. I imagine Big Skeez in a fancy suit, sipping a cocktail in a seedy smoked filled bar singing this at 3am on a Sunday morning.
