Music streaming giant Spotify has settled a class action lawsuit against them by agreeing to compensate songwriters who claimed they hadn’t been paid enough royalties from the company.

As The Guardian reports, Spotify has been pushing for the $112 million settlement since last May, following lawsuits from Camper Van Beethove’s David Lowery and singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick, the latter of which accused the streaming service of “wholesale copyright infringement”.

$43.5 million of the settlement will go to class members, while the rest will be committed to paying ongoing royalties, with New York Judge Alison Nathan describing the figure as a “significant recovery” for those who took on Spotify.

Spotify isn’t out of hot water yet, though, with a billion-dollar lawsuit from Wixen Music Publishing still active among others.

Wixen Music Publishing, a company that oversees Tom Petty, Neil Young and more, filed the lawsuit at the end of last year, and wasn’t happy with the class action settlement, describing it as “a practical free pass on wilful infringement”.
