Scottish indie-pop powerhouse and Splendour In The Grass act Chvrches have dished up a serious dose of synth-pop with the release of their highly anticipated third album, Love Is Dead.
Since late January, the trio has been teasing fans with singles, including My Enemy featuring Matt Berninger (The National), and by all accounts, the wait for the full 13-track release today has been worth it.
As The Music notes, “Love Is Dead is the darkest the band has ever been while finally becoming as poppy as they've always wanted to be.
“As songwriters and synth-pop producers, Chvrches have always smartly straddled the lines between mainstream appeal and alternative curiosity.
“The same trend continues on Love Is Dead, with a greater sense of lyrical focus from leading lady Lauren Mayberry.”
Finding that balance was no doubt in part due to Grammy Award-winning producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) stepping in to co-produce nine of the songs, marking the first time Chvrches have welcomed outside influences.
According to vocalist Lauren Mayberry, the lyrical influences throughout stem from the band “coming to terms with the fact that there are great things in the world and there are awful things in the world and that you can’t get one without the other”.
Its release couldn’t have come at a better time, with Chvrches scheduled to perform at Splendour In The Grass in July alongside headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne.
