It's cancellation was only announced mere hours ago but efforts are already being made to save Brooklyn Nine Nine.

As Deadline reports, Hulu, the SVOD home of the comedy series, could pick it up and continue on with a sixth season.

update: nbc saves 'brooklyn nine-nine' — "we're thrilled to have it"

The deal would be similar to fellow axed-Fox show, The Mindy Project, which was picked up by Hulu following its cancellation from the network in 2015.

Other potential homes for Brooklyn Nine Nine include TBS and Netflix.

A number of petitions have been launched since this morning's news, garnering thousands of signatures in a bid to save the show.

Prepare to farewell to your favourite detectives (and Scully & Hitchcock…) as it's just been announced that Fox's Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been cancelled.

As reported by Deadline, the show's cult following couldn't quite save the comedy due to its falling ratings throughout its run, suggested to be caused by "constant scheduling moves".

While TV Line reports that the final episode of the show will air on 20 May in the US, there are hopes that streaming giant Netflix may pick up the series due to existing deals in several territories.

Show co-creator Dan Goor has taken to Twitter today to share his thanks to fans for their support, saying "#brooklyn99 fans are the best fans in the world. It means the world to me and everyone else who works on the show."

In addition to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fox also announced the cancellation of The Mick and The Last Man On Earth.
