Co-creator of ABC's iconic Countdown, Robbie Weekes, is confirmed to have passed away.
According to Noise11, Weekes' son Stephen confirmed the news.
Weekes created the music show alongside executive producer Michael Shrimpton in 1974. He directed Countdown from the beginning until 1987, as well as being involved in the Commonwealth Games TV coverage in 1982 and 1986.
In 2016, Weekes received the Order of Australia for his work in television.
The news comes just weeks after Ian "Molly" Meldrum revealed that Countdown could return to the ABC in the near future.
"There is a possibility there will be a new Countdown. All young performers, all young presenters," Meldrum said.
"It'll hopefully be in the same timeslot, 6-7 on the Sunday night, repeated on the Saturday.
"I think we need it now."
