Actor and musician T. E. Lewis has passed away late Thursday night at age 59. 

The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith star died suddenly at his home in Katherine in the Northern Territory, with the circumstances surrounding Lewis' death yet to be released.

Lewis released two albums through Skinnyfish Music, 2005's Sunshine After Rain and 2014's Beneath The Sun, and most recently released single, Shifting Sands, in May last year.

Lewis' family have shared a statement about his life and work, as well as asking for privacy and that "in recognition of his extraordinary public life, they have agreed to the use of his image and voice".

"It is with tremendous sadness that we confirm the sudden passing of T. E. Lewis late last night at his home in Katherine, Northern Territory," the statement reads.

"Mr Lewis will be forever remembered for his compelling and enduring work on stage and screen over 40 years, as a renowned musician, and as the driving force and vision behind Djilpin Arts with his partner and his extended family of Beswick and Arnhem Land communities. He will be greatly missed. Mr Lewis was 59."
