A local Minnesota prosecutor announced yesterday that no criminal charges will be made over the accidental death of iconic musician Prince in April 2016.
As The Guardian reports, a two-year investigation into the case found that there was no evidence to justify prosecution after the pop star suffered an accidental fentanyl overdose from counterfeit pills he believed to be a weaker painkiller.
Minnesota’s Carver County district attorney Mark Metz said that investigators could not determine who supplied the singer with the pills that had been labelled as prescription opioid painkillers.

“In all likelihood, Prince had no idea he was taking a counterfeit pill that could kill him,” Metz said.
“Prince’s death is a tragic example that opioid addiction and overdose deaths do not discriminate, no matter the demographic.”
The announcement brings close to the local and federal US investigations concerning the incident.
The news heightens the increasing link between fatal overdoses and fentanyl, a painkiller that's 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine which has also been linked to the deaths of Tom Petty and Michael Jackson.
