The NSW Government has scrapped plans to demolish and rebuild Sydney's ANZ Stadium following a massive push against the move.

As ABC reports, Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed that instead "two thirds" of the 80,000-seat venue will be refurbished, saving taxpayers $500 million.

"This will change the atmosphere of the entire stadium," Berejiklian said.

"But importantly it will provide a rectangular stadium with fans closer to the action. That is what is required for a world-class stadium."

ANZ Stadium has hosted major gigs this year including Foo Fighters, as well as Ed Sheeran just a fortnight ago.

Taylor Swift is also set to perform at the venue this November.

However, plans to rebuild Allianz Stadium in Moore Park will still go ahead as planned and is due to be demolished next year.

The rebuild is expected to increase the stadium's capacity to 45,000.

The news comes after the government's announcement to rebuild both venues resulted in over 200,000 people signing a petition calling for the plans to be axed.
