UPDATE: A Day In The Life Of Marlon Bundo will be released in Australia on April 27.
What started as good-intention stunt against US Vice President Mike Pence has become a global success.
John Oliver's new children's book about a gay bunny, A Day In The Life Of Marlon Bundo, written to satirise Pence's A Day In The Life Of The Vice President, has become so popular it is outselling Pence's book.
The title character of Marlon Bundo is based on Pence's real-life pet rabbit and is portrayed as gay; an intentional move taking aim at Pence's support of homophobic conversion therapy groups.
Watch Oliver explain the situation on Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight below.
Since then, the US late night host's book (written by Jill Twiss) has skyrocketed to #1 on Amazon's Childrens Book Best Sellers list, against Pence's book (written by daughter Charlotte) at #4, while the Kindle edition of A Day In The Life Of Marlon Bundo is also placed at #2.
All of the profits from Oliver's book will be donated to The Trevor Project, a US charity for LGBTQ youth, and AIDS United.
Surprisingly, Charlotte Pence applauded Oliver's move while appearing on Fox Business Network this week.
"… in all seriousness, [Oliver's] book is contributing to charities that I think we can all get behind," Pence said.
"We have two books giving to charities that are about bunnies so I’m all for it really."
