Australian country singer Jason Owen has been "targeted, abused and dragged" by a number of people after being mistakenly identified as a music industry executive.

As Lexington Herald Leader reports, co-president of Monument Record and Sandbox Entertainment owner, Jason Owen, has been publicly slammed for opposing the recent and short-lived appointment of Mike Huckabee to the board of the Country Music Association foundation, given Huckabee's stance against gay marriage and his support of the NRA.

Pollstar reported that Owen, who shares a son with his husband, slammed the appointment as a "grossly offensive decision" and said that Huckabee's stance "made it clear my family is not welcome in his America".

Huckabee submitted his resignation just one day after being appointed.

The Dubbo artist has been forced to take to social media to address the abuse targeted at him.

"As you may have noticed, over the past 36 hours, I've been targeted, abused and dragged into a case of mistaken identity," Owen said in a statement posted to Facebook.

"People are confusing me with Jason Owen from Monument Records/Sandbox Management in the USA. I am NOT him. I'm a young country singer in Australia, with nothing to do with the situation involving Jason Owen of Sandbox, Mike Huckabee, or the CMA."

22-year-old Kentucky singer Jason Owen has also been the victim of online bullying.

"I have been called a bully; I have been called trash and un-American," he told LHL.

"It’s crazy."
