Remember Me from Pixar's Coco has beaten out Sufjan Stevens and others to nab the 2018 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The film went on to pick up Best Animated Picture, an award it was the hot favourite to win.

The Mexican-themed tune was written by husband and wife duo Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez, who also took out the same award in 2014 for the infectious Let It Go from fellow Pixar do Frozen.

In a tough category, the song triumphed over Sufjan Stevens’ Mystery Of Lovehis heartbreaking contribution to Call Me By Your Name. He performed a stunning rendition of it at the awards, flanked by none other than St Vincent.

It also trumped fan favourite This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, the soundtrack of which has enjoyed a number of weeks at the top of the ARIA album charts.

Other tracks in the category include Mary J Blige’s Mighty River from Mudbound and Common’s collaboration with Andre Day for Stand Up For Something from Marshall.

In more bad news for prominent alternative musicians, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood's haunting score for Phantom Thread lost out to Alexandre Desplat for his transcendent work on The Shape Of Water.

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder paid tribute to the great Tom Petty, performing Petty's track Room At The Top as part of this year's In Memoriam segment, which included honours to actors, directors, producers and other film industry executives who passed away in the last 12 months.

Over to the rest of the winners, The Shape Of Water has been dubbed Best Picture, while, as expected, Frances McDormand has taken out Actress In A Leading Role for her part in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Gary Oldman won Actor In A Leading Role for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. In a historic win, Jordan Peele took home Best Original Screenplay for  Get Out.

Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney won out Actor and Actress In A Supporting Role for their work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the biopic I, Tonya. The Oscar for Cinematography went to Roger A Deakins for Blade Runner 2049, Directing went to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape Of Water and while Australian Lee Smith took out the award for Film Editing (his fourth time winning in the category) for Dunkirk.

Continuing it's winning streak, The Shape Of Water also nabbed the Production Design category. Dunkirk’s Richard King and Alex Gibson scored the prize for Sound Editing, while their colleagues Gregg Landaker, Gary A Rizzo and Mark Weingarten took home the award for Sound Mixing.

It would also be remiss to not mention that Kobe Bryant – yes, that Kobe Bryant – has taken home the award for Short Film (Animated) alongside Glen Keane for Dear Basketball.
