Donald Glover has revealed the extent of co-star Chevy Chase’s racism during filming on beloved sit-com Community.

In his profile with The New Yorker, Glover recalled the incidents that have plagued Chase through the latter part of his career.

According to the profile, Chase once told Glover that, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black,” and often tried to disrupt his scenes and made similar racial jokes between takes.

It’s not the first time that the comedy icon’s views interfered with the show. In 2012, Chase was forced to issue an apology following an argument with series creator Dan Harmon, in which he dropped the n-word and caused a halt in production.

However, according to Harmon, Glover reacted calmly to Chase’s unprofessional behaviour.

“Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off,” Harmon said.

“I remember apologising to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-P.C. verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it.’”

When asked about his personal opinion about Chase, Glover responded, “I just saw Chevy as fighting time — a true artist has to be OK with his reign being over.”

“I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere — he’s almost too human.”

Chase responded to inquiries about the feature, commenting, “I am saddened to hear that Donald perceived me in that light.”
