The crown that is the Australian music landscape has gained another jewel with the announcement of brand new independent record label Break Even Recordings.
The brainchild of Inertia Music colleagues Tom Grant, Ryan Saar, George Gillies and Bree Wilkinson, the music will be distributed via Inertia but everything else will be put out through the power of the core four.
"In our time working together at Inertia Music - as well as in community radio, events and the media - the four of us have enjoyed developing our enthusiasm for diverse and exciting music together," the team told The Music.
"By joining forces we hope to use the skills and networks we've learnt along the way to create a platform for bringing artists we loved out of the fringes and to as many ears as we can.
"The heart of independent music lies in a music-first mentality, and Break Even Recordings will be our way of using this idea to contribute to an already vibrant and inspiring landscape in Australian music."
The group's music-first philosophy is already showing with their first signing, Brisbane psych six-piece, Nice Biscuit.
"Watching Nice Biscuit for the first time was a revelation - there was such an electric immediacy to their music, and they brought a vivid imagination to every facet of their show," Saar told The Music.
"It wasn't just another gig, it was a phenomenon in the making, and my gut churned with that familiar feeling of knowing that I had to - I MUST - do something, ANYTHING with this band.
"I'm jumping with anticipation that Nice Biscuit will be the first band we release with Break Even, and can't wait for the rest of the world to go through the same motions as I did when I first came across them."
Wasting no time in getting their music out into the world, Nice Biscuit have dropped their first single Captain, four and a half minutes of entrancing psych-rock and gorgeous double-barrelled harmonies.
