The 27th season of Australia’s leading short film festival, Flickerfest, arrives in Melbourne this week after wowing Sidneysiders at Bondi Pavilion in January. Now on its nationwide tour, this two-day stop in the Victorian capital comes just in time for Valentine’s day, offering loved-up film buffs a date night with a difference.
During a feature-length presentation on 14 Feb at Kino Palace Cinemas, four of this year’s most exceptional shorts will be on offer, including Daniel Agdag’s Lost Property Office, an Aussie-made animation exploring the solitary life of a whimsical lost-and-found clerk, and Australian director Billie Pleffer’s Fysh, a touching yet playful meditation on mortality and consciousness. The screening also features a cherry-picked selection of this year’s Flickerfest award-winners, including Kate Leofe’s Somersault Pike, winner of the Avid Award For Best Editing In An Australian Short Film, and Locker Room by Greta Nash, winner of the Rebel8 Award For Outstanding Emerging Female Director. In addition to this knock-out evening of short films, there will also be a selection of drinks and bar snacks available, so you can really make a night of it.
The cinematic delights continue on 15 Feb, with a must-see showcase of European-made cinema. Amongst the evening's billing, the Oscar-nominated All Of Us (Watu Wote) tells the true story of Christian and Muslim bus passengers who put their ideological differences aside to survive a terrorist attack in Kenya, and Wave, by Oscar-winning Irish director Benjamin Cleary, investigates the subtleties of communication, when a man wakes from a coma speaking an unrecognisable, yet fully-formed language.
To make sure you get the most bang for your buck, Flickerfest are offering a season pass for both nights for just $40 (non-concession), saving punters $5 compared to the price of individual tickets to both evenings.
